Plastic Surgery is widely practiced in the United States including Texas. Every year, more and more people are enjoying the benefits of Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery that is why it is not surprising to see more and more practitioners and specialists offering their services to a lot of different patients.
Plastic surgery is a medical procedure that entails reforming, rehabilitating, correcting, and enhancing a person’s physical attributes. Although plastic surgery is reputable for improving the aesthetic characteristics of a person, it has a deeper and more dignified contribution to medical science and that is to provide a higher or more tolerant quality of life for its patients.
Plastic surgery is not a procedure that uses synthetic organic materials or polymer. It is called “Plastic Surgery” because the word plastic is derived from the Greek word “plastikos” which means to mold or to shape. Remolding and Reshaping are the usual objectives of any surgery under this medical specialty.
This medical procedure originated in India. Not many people are aware of this but plastic surgery has been practiced since 2000 BCE. There are two people who have made significant contributions to this field and they did not live in the same generation. The first major contributor of the field, whose works and notes provided the fundamental theories of plastic surgery is Sushruta. Sushruta was an Indian surgeon who lived in 6th BCE. He developed and practiced a lot of medical procedures during his time that are still being practiced or at least being used as reference today.
His works which were translated to Arabic during the Abbasid Caliphate made its way to Europe. It attracted the attention of the Western world specifically the British physicians. Surgeons from Britain would go to India to observe rhinoplasty being performed through native procedures. One of these doctors who came to observe the procedures is Doctor Joseph Constantine Carpue. He studied rhinoplsty for 20 years and when he returned home, he performed the first rhinoplasty in the Western World in 1815. The instruments used in the procedures were further developed after the first major surgery performed by Carpue.
During WWI, this procedure would be most beneficial to British soldiers. RAF troops were susceptible to injuries, burns and gunshot wounds. Because of this, they had to undergo rehabilitation and surgery. During this time, another surgeon made a name for himself in the field of Plastic surgery. Sir Harold Gilles conducted corrective procedures to many of the injured soldiers during the time. The first ever recorded person to benefit from plastic surgery is Walter Yeo, a British soldier, who received a skin graft from Sir Gilles.
Sir Gilles, the second person who had significant contributions to the field of plastic surgery, and his colleagues experimented and developed different procedures in plastic surgery. During this time, Sir Gilles was able to conduct two sex reassignment procedures. He successfully administered a female to male operation on Michael Dillon and male to female operation on Roberta Cowell. The procedures he developed became the standards for sexual reassignment operations for forty years.
Because of his contributions to Plastic Surgery, Sir Harold Gilles was considered to be the father of Plastic Surgery.
Today, a lot of fields and specialties have branched out from the intial works of these two founders. Almost all corrective requirements a person needs in his or her physical traits could be accomplished or provided by modern plastic and cosmetic surgery. These surgeries are available and applicable to both men and women.
In Texas alone, there are numerous hospitals, offices and clinics that offers consultations and operations. The services or operations offered in the Lone Star State ranges from Cosmetic Surgery to Pediatric Plastic Surgery. There are invasive and non-invasive procedures available depending on the patient’s preference or need.
