Houston, being the center of biomedical research in the state of texas, and having health care services as one of it’s primary services provided to its citizens, it is expected that Plastic Surgery is one of the specializations practiced in this state. This would be a good place to have cosmetic or reconstructive surgery since the city takes pride in their health care services. This would mean that medical practitioners in Houston will most likely be more careful with their work avoiding any unnecessary risks and accidents.

Plastic surgery would have just as high a risk as any of the other fields in medical science. The only difference is if there should be an accident during a plastic surgery operation, the bad results will be easy to spot since it deals with the external physical attributes of an individual.

What we have to realize is that the risks of a plastic surgery operation is something that must be known to both the patient and the doctor who will conduct the procedures. There are conditions in a person’s lifestyle or physique that might affect the probability of having something really bad to happen during an operation like blood levels, cigarette smoking, allergies and others.

The common risks that we have to be aware of when undergoing a plastic or cosmetic surgery procedure are the following:

Bleeding and Hematoma: This is usually caused by high blood pressure. If you have a high blood pressure, you must be aware of the risk of bleeding after the procedure. Bleeding usually takes place within 24 hours after the operation. If the bleeding doesn’t stop, this would most likely lead to hematoma or the collection of the blood. If too much blood is collected in an area of your skin, this will prevent the circulation oxygen in that area and may cause necrosis or tissue death.

Infection: Just like any wound, this risk is present and may take place whenever bacteria enters the open wound. To prevent this from happening, the patient is given anibiotics during operations. This will lesten the risk of bacterial infection during operation.

Suture Reaction: Some people may have negative reactions towards sutures. as this is not a part of the person’s body, this might be rejected by the patient after the operation. This could cause build up of puss and such and if not attended to, the infection might spread through out the skin.

Skin Reactions: If your skin is sensitive, you might experience itching, rashing, blisters and the like right after the operation. you could also get these reactions due to the bandages used to protect the wound. This is a risk that could happen accidentally.

Not healing Properly: It is possible that the cuts made during the operation may not close properly. this may be caused by multiple factors. this will definitely leave a scar upon healing which will require corrective operation once the scar has healed.

Necrosis: This is happens when healthy tissues don’t get enough oxygen due to blockages. the result will be tisuue death. upon first symptoms of this side effect, be sure to have your surgeon attend to it at once.

Nerve Damage: This is the highest risk one will face under the knife. When a nerve is cut, the person may feel numbness and weakness in that area of his body. Nerve damage could either be permanent or temporary. If it is a temporary damage, it could take as long as 3 years to recover completely.

Discontent: There is a possibility that the person undergoing the operation has more of a psychological problem than a physical one. If it is a psychological problem, one or two operations may not be enough to make the person satisfied with the results. Some patients tend to have their whole body operated and reconstructed and still not be satisfied. This is a risk every patient should be careful of because the surgeon and modern medicine could only do so much.

These are just a few samples of the risks involved when going under the knife. It is important that patients who wants to have any part of their body changed or enhanced should know these possible complications. It is best to ask your surgeon about everything you need to know and every preparation you need to do to prevent any serious complications.

Also, it is advisable to consult with your psychiatrist first to determine whether such an operation would be helpful to you an your search for happiness.

These plastic and cosmetic surgeons perform different kinds of procedures. If you want to know what kinds of plastic surgery procedures are available to you, we are listing them down. We will also list down a few details about them so you’d have an idea what these procedures are about.

There are two major categories under plastic surgery, one is Cosmetic surgery, while the other is reconstructive surgery.

Cosmetic surgery deals mostly with reshaping the patient’s physical attributes in order to increase the patient’s self esteem. Most of the time, Cosmetic surgery is performed out of the patient’s desire to look more attractive.

Reconstructive surgery on the other hand is performed to correct any physical abnormalities that a person has due to infection, birth defects or physical trauma a person suffered from accidents.

Under these two major categories, various surgical procedures are available. The procedures that would fall under reconstructive Surgery are as follows:

Cranio Facial Surgery - Cranio facial surgery deals with reforming any physical anomalies on a person’s skull, bones and soft tissues surrounding the face. It could be divided into pediatric Craniofacial surgery, which deals with physical defects due to congenital anomalies. This would usually involve babies born with physical abnormalities. The other sub-classification would be the adult cranio facial surgery which would involve adults who suffered injuries or fractures around the cranio facial area.

Hand Surgery - Just like cranio facial surgery, hand surgery deals with the correction of any physical abnormalities involving the person’s or patient’s hands. This could be performed to infants who have been born with birth defects to correct the nerves and the shape of the hands. Also, it could be performed when reconnecting severed or amputated arms for adults.

Micro surgery - This is generally performed in order to reconstruct missing tissues on a part of the body. To perform such a procedure healthy tissues are transplanted on the area with the missing tissues.

Busrn Surgery - As the name implies, this involves primarily the reconstruction of burnt skin and tissue of a burn victim.

Pediatric Plastic surgery - There are a lot of possible physical defects or abnormalities caused by congenital anomalies. To address these abnormalities by having it surgically repaired as early as possible would be the best way to deal with the dilemma.

These are just samples of Reconstructive or corrective surgeries. There should be others depending on the needs of a patient. Now, under cosmetic surgery, these are the usual procedures that are being performed:

Abdominoplasty or Tummy tuck - this is performed to reshape the person’s abdominal area making it firmer.

Blepharoplasty or Eyelid Surgery - this is done to reshape the eyelids.

Mammoplasty - which involves the reshaping of the breasts. This procedure is further classified in to three types:

Breast Augmentation - More commonly known as breast enlargement or boob job. This is often conducted on women who have micromastia or underdeveloped breasts

Breast Reduction - This procedure is often conducted to males who have unusually large breasts or is suffering from gunecomastia. This usually happens during puberty.

Breast Lift - This is performed to reshape the breasts that have become saggy, often due to weight loss. The procedure requires the removal of breast skin.

Buttock Augmentation - This procedure involves the augmentation or enlarging the buttocks of a patient. The usual procedure for this is implanting of silicone or fat grafting.

Rhinoplasty - This procedure is also known as nose job. It reshapes the patient’s nose making it straighter, longer or thinner.

Otoplasty - this is surgical procedure that reshapes the patient’s ears.

Labiaplasty - Surgical reduction or reshaping of the woman’s labia.
